Economic aspects of forest utilization and realization of multifunctional forest management

in some European countries

Abstract. The legal interference of a state into forest management rules begun in the second half of the 19th century. Initially, it aimed at assuring permanence of wood production. As the years went by, forest management objectives were being gradually extended and included protective (ecological), as well as social (recreational) functions, which was leading to gradual increase of forest management costs. This increase continues to occur also currently, which has been reflected in rich literature of the topic in Austria, Germany, and other countries. At the same time, the literature shows various solutions to financing of such consequences (higher costs, lower incomes), depending on economic and organizational form of forest management and its degree of commercialization.
